Although Mandarin Chinese is the National Language of China, most people in China speak a second, local, dialect.

Spoken Chinese compromises many regional variants, dialects. The differences between the major spoken variations of Chinese are such that they are mutually unintelligible so that in groups of diverse people in China, Mandarin will be the only form of speech that everyone understands.

If living or working with speakers of these dialects knowing these dialects can be of considerable social benefit. Most Chinese who permanently move to a new area will attempt to learn up the local dialect.

Two of the most widely spoken dialects are Shanghainese and Cantonese.

Shanghainese is spoken in and around Shanghai, and also in many areas of the large business districts to be found in China. It is the second most spoken form of Chinese after Mandarin

At PRChinese we have tutors who are fluent in  Shanghainese and can provide tutoring in this language.

An effective method for learning a language, one used by many students, is to use music as learning tool. For Chinese there is no better singer to listen to than Teresa Teng.

Even several years after her death Teresa Teng is still the most well known Chinese singer throughout Asia. Even though born in Taiwan she is still popular throughout the mainland. One popular phrase in China during the rule of Deng Xiaoping was "By day, Deng Xiaoping rules Chinese mainland. But by night, Teresa Teng rules!" For the purpose of learning Chinese Teresa Teng is a perfect choice. Her songs are not only enjoyable to listen to, but her clear and excellent pronunciation lets a student hear each and every character clearly.

For intermediate students with a good background of Chinese study, our tutors go through the meaning, character by character, of some of Teresa Teng’s most famous songs. With this instruction, and with repetition of listing, students can come to hear and understand new Chinese characters and there meaning in popular usage.
